Troubleshooting

This document covers questions and answers to diagnose some general problems and platform-specific problems.

Basic Steps

You are continually prompted for your username and password.
Make sure you are typing the correct username and password. Check your CapsLock key and make sure it is off, your username and password are in lowercase.

You get "Server not found or server does not have a DNS entry."
Make sure you are on-line and your modem is still talking to Cyber Internet Services, Inc. (be careful, picking up the phone will usually disconnect you). Make sure the URL you typed or are trying to go to really exists. Make sure your DNS settings have not disappeared.

Windows 95

When I logon, Microsoft Network pops up and asks me to pay money.
Go back through Internet Setup Wizard and when you get to the questions that asks "How will you connect to the Internet" make sure that the circle next to "I already have an account with a different service provider" is filled in.

Under control panels I don't have Mail and Fax.
You will need to go to control panels and run add/remove software. You will want to add Microsoft Exchange from your Windows CD-ROM or diskettes.

I connect fine, but the host systems logs me off.
More than likely your Internet is not setup right. Run back through the Instructions for MS Internet Jumpstart Kit. You can bypass the part where you install from disk and go straight to the part that reads Click Start. Follow the instructions the rest of the way through.

My DNS settings are gone.
You need to re-run the Internet Setup Wizard. It is on your Start menu under Start|Programs|Accessories|Internet Tools|Internet Setup Wizard. Follow your original Cyber Internet Services installation instructions or just click through each screen until you come to DNS and enter 66.182.17.15 for the primary DNS and 66.182.17.16 for the alternate DNS server.

Windows 3.x

After my modem dials, I get the error "Unable to neotiate dial-up connection (failed)" In the Connect To screen, click properties. Under the General tab, click the box that says "Bring up terminal window after dialing" so that there is an 'X' in it. Press 'OK', then connect. When the terminal window comes up, press 'Continue'.

In the dial properties, the "et" get left off of "cyberis.net"
In most cases this won't be a problem. The data for the first dial profile that you create is stored in a file called "con00000.con". The second is "con00001.con" and so on. Edit the file with Notepad and change 'cyberis.n' to "cyberis.net" and restart windows.

When I click on the dialer program in get the error "Invalid Path"
Highlight the icon by clicking on it once. Goto File then Properties, click browse. Find the 'iedial.exe' file (located in c:\iexplore by default) and double click on it. Edit the command line so that it reads 'c:\iexplore\iedial.exe con00000.con'. NOTE: If you istalled into a different directory, the command line should reflect that. The file 'con00000.con' is the stored data for the first dial profile you created. So if you are having this problem with the second, the file will be 'con00001.con' instead.

The information doesn't get saved in the properties section
Goto File Manager, in the directory where you installed the program (usually c:\iexplore) double click on the file con00000.con. Enter ALL of the information as specified in the instructions, press 'OK', then close, and save it. Then close File Manager and go back to program manager. Hilight the dialer icon by click on it once. Goto File then Properties. Edit the command line to read 'c:\iexplore\con00000.con' instead of 'c:\iexplore\iedial.exe'. NOTE: If you installed the program to a different directory, the command line should reflect that.

I can't get past Initializing Modem

  1. In most cases this is because of the initialization string. Using a text editor (Notepad will do) edit the file modems2.ini located in the directory where you installed the software. (Usually c:\iexplore) Change the init string to equal the init string for your specific modem.
  2. In some cases the problem is that the modem is installed on a nonstandard IRQ.

I get a MAPI error when trying to send email
You probably pressed a mailto: link inside a version of Microsoft Internet Explorer that does not include mail capability. Download the newer version of IE, or use a separate program such as Eudora to send email.

My DNS settings are gone
In the Connect To box, click Properties, then the Domain Name tab, then type 66.182.17.15 for Primary DNS and 66.182.17.16 for Back-Up or secondary DNS.

Macintosh

I have System Software 7.5.2 and I have heard rumors that MacTCP does not work right.
The rumors are true. The MacTCP that came with System Software 7.5.2 does not work. You will have to contact your local Mac dealer and get either the older 7.5.1 or the newer 7.5.3.
